A gátat az 1970-es években tervezték, olyan stabilra, hogy ellenálljon VI-os intenzitású földrengéseknek. Magyarországon eddig még nem alkalmazott eljárással történeti följegyzéseket, fényképeket és rajzokat, valamint régészeti ásatások adatait sorakoztatjuk fel annak igazolására, hogy 1541. augusztus 21-én egy IX-es intenzitású rengés pusztította el Visegrádot. Bizonyítékaink között van a Salamon-tornyot kettévágó hasadék és a királyi palota szomszédságában egykor állt ferences kolostor maradványain felismerhető deformációs jelenségek. A Salamon-toronyról a 19. század végén készült rajzok és fényképek hűen dokumentálják a 16. századi földrengéskárokat. A pontos datáláshoz a rengés során tönkrement ferences kolostor – régészeti ásatásokkal megtámogatott – története szolgáltat adalékokat. A királyi palotára és a kolostorra vonatkozó történeti dokumentáció elemzésével megállapítottuk, hogy Visegrád katasztrófájáért az a rengés lehetett felelős, amelyet 1541. augusztus 21-én , Pesten élt át Bornemisza Péter, későbbi lutheránus püspök. Visegrádot 1544-ben elfoglalta a török, ezáltal megszűnt stratégiai jelentősége; az elromlott épületeket és a várost nem építették újjá. Kritikus létesítmények tervezésénél elengedhetetlen feltétel a környezet történeti szeizmológiai és archeoszeizmológiai vizsgálata. = The Danube Bend is the site of the proposed Nagymaros dam, part of the Gabčikovo-Nagymaros hydropower complex in Slovakia and Hungary. The dam was designed in the 1970s to resist intensity VI seismic events. We present historical and archaeological evidence for an intensity IX earthquake on 21 August 1541, which destroyed buildings of the royal town of Visegrád. Evidence includes vertical fissures cutting through the 30 m high, 13th century donjon Salamon Tower, built on hard rock. Some parts of the adjacent 15th century Franciscan friary, built on the alluvial plain, collapsed due to liquefaction of the subsoil. The date of a potentially responsible earthquake on 21 August 1541 was recorded in a sermon of the eyewitness Lutheran minister Péter Bornemisza, living at Pest-Buda, 35 km away. Taken by the Ottoman army in 1544, the royal town and the fortress lost strategic importance, never to be rebuilt.
