A különböző történelmi korszakok politikai, társadalmi és tudományos közege egyrészt meghatározta a tudós testület vezetőinek megválasztását, másrészt kijelölte a társaság élén állók irányelveit, cselekvésük mozgásterét, vagy épp annak hiányát. Ez eredményezte a hivatali szervezet folytonos szabályozását és azon belül az elnökök és főtitkárok feladat- és hatáskörének formálását, amely egyúttal az Akadémia vezetésében váltakozó befolyásukat is jelentette. A változásokhoz a tudós arcképcsarnok és ezzel összefüggésben az intézményi reprezentáció, az emlékezés hagyománya is igazodott.
