Az említett felgyorsuló korszak sajátos történelmi eseményei és társadalmi folyamatai, valamint az ezekkel kapcsolatos azóta folyó kutatások felhívják a figyelmet olyan alapvető fogalmak újragondolására is, mint a vallás, vallásosság, spiritualitás, vallásos és közösségi identitás, valamint ezek társfogalmai. Az ezzel kapcsolatos diskurzusban kerül bevezetésre az új vallási mozgalmak esernyőfogalma is, amely a kor-szakban megjelenő, formájukban, céljaikban, vagy alkalmazott módszereik tekintetében innovatív vallási jelenségeket szándékozott összefogni minimális közös kategorikus nevezőként. Mindazonáltal az új fogalom bevezetése – amely többek közt a korábban problematikusnak minősített szekta (sect) és kultusz (cult) fogal-makat terveztett felváltani – további diszciplináris és módszertani kihívásokat is eredményezett, melyekre az adott tudományterületek különbözőképpen válaszoltak. Mindezeket tovább komplikálta az ezeket körülvevő társadalmi diskurzus dinamikája, az egyes korábbi fogalmak köznyelvi és szakmai beágyazottsága, valamint a kulturális, regionális és lokális sajátosságok. A konferenciára beküldött kézirat és az ezen alapuló előadás ennek a sokoldalú diskurzusnak egy szegmensét szándékozik általánosan letisztázni, reflektálva a korábbi fogalmak történeti és asszociatív kontextusaira, a témakört tárgyaló diszciplináris és társadalmi attitűdök különbségeire, valamint a bevezetett új fogalom egyes – hosszabb távon kihívásokat jelentő – aspektusaira.
