This paper presents the way leading to and the results of a pilot study
carried out among Hungarian students to get more information about
their ideas and beliefs about language and culture. The first part of the
paper describes the theoretical background and the ideas that led to the
design of a questionnaire, which was used to gain information from
three different types of language learners. The second part describes the
questions of the survey, while the third part presents the results in the form
of graphs with added textual evidence. The conclusion offers a number of
ideas and suggestions about the inclusion of culture in language teaching.
