Az állami irányítás, a szolgáltatók és rajtuk keresztül a fogyasztók felelősségteljes részvétele ma már alapkövetelmény. A hazai turisztikai célú fejlesztések forrása döntően támogatás, amelyek zöme az elmúlt két évtizedben az uniós forrásokhoz köthető. A tanulmány a fenntarthatóság szempontrendszerének érvényesítését vizsgálja az uniós csatlakozás óta eltelt három programozási időszak turisztikai célú fejlesztési programjainak és felhívásainak értékelési szempontjaira vonatkozóan, illetve az indikátorok és monitoringmutatók területén. A kutatás eredményeként megállapításra került, hogy bár a fenntarthatósággal kapcsolatos alapelvek az érintettek körében egyre inkább az általános ismeretek részét képezik, érvényesítésük és érvényesülésük egyelőre kevésbé valósul meg. A négy fő területből leginkább a társadalmi-kulturális és a környezeti fenntarthatóságot támogató tevékenységek jelennek meg, azonban ezeknél is hiányzik a hosszútávú ösztönző- és monitoringrendszer.
