The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology
or Medicine to a Swedish geneticist, Svante Pääbo, for his discoveries concerning
the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution, for the sequencing of the genome
of the Neanderthal, the discovery of a previously unknown hominin, Denisova, and the
establishment of a new scientific discipline, paleogenomics.
