E felismerést gyakran előzmények nélküli revelációként mutatják be, ami a szűk értelemben vett kognitív tudomány vonatkozásában nem is alaptalan, hiszen az e diszciplínát hosszú ideig uraló klasszikus kognitivista fölfogás valóban figyelmen kívül hagyta a megismerés testi föltételeit. Csakhogy maga a kognitív tudomány összetett, sok részdiszciplínából álló képződmény, melynek az agyi mechanizmusokat vizsgáló idegtudomány, kognitív-, fejlődés- és viselkedéslélektan, robotika, mesterséges intelligencia kutatás és a nyelvészet mellett, részét képezi az elmefilozófia is. Míg az igaz, hogy a megtestesült elme gondolata fordulatot jelent az „első generációs”, test nélküli kognitív tudományhoz képest, az sem tagadható, hogy a filozófiában korántsem új gondolat, hogy a lélek/elme szimbiotikus kapcsolatban van a testtel. Az utóbbi évtizedekben tehát előállt az a zavaró helyzet, hogy a kognitív tudományban érzékelhetően radikális újítás történt, de az ugyanezen tudomány részét képező elmefilozófiában csak egy rég ismert gondolat bukkant fel. Ami a kognitív tudomány esetében valódi újítás volt, az a filozófiában egy az ókor óta ismert hagyományhoz való visszatérés. Jelen kötet e zavar enyhítésére törekszik. A benne szereplő tanulmányok a lélek/elme és test integrált voltának különböző korok filozófusai által kidolgozott változatait elemzik, megmutatva, hogy ugyanannak az ideának különböző történeti korokban és intellektuális kontextusokban milyen típusai léteztek.
