Ennek lehetésges okairól számos politikafilozófiai megfejtés született már, és ezekkel együtt persze arról szóló programok is, hogy mi vezethetne kifelé a válságból. Az utóbbi másfél-két évtized egyik legfelkapottabb megfejtése és programja a nyugati diskurzusban kétséget kizárhatóan a republikanizmus. A mai republikánusok szerint az a fő baj, hogy valamikor a 19. század derekán félrecsúszott a szabadságról való gondolkodásunk. A válság végül is ennek a folyománya, ezért hát a kiút első lépése is az lenne, hogy a 19. század dereka óta népszerűvé váló liberális szabadságeszményt lecseréljük. Ennek helyébe a republikánusok régi és rég el is feledett, ám a jelenlegi diskurzusban éppen ezért az újdonság erejével ható eszményt javasolnak alternatívaként. Ennek fő tanulsága, hogy a szabadság szemszögéből nagyon nem mindegy, hogy milyen hatalmi struktúrák vannak a társadalomban. A republikánus ideál: a domináló hatalomtól, az önkénytől mentes politikai rendszer. Ilyen lenne az igazi köztársaság. Kötetünkkel be szeretnénk mutatni, hogy a republikanizmus mit tanít az intézményekről, a törvényekről, a demokráciáról, a gazdaságról és a titkosszolgálatról, és hogy mi köze van más
