We found different structured slag pieces in 7 features of the settlement and from one feature a unique slag-covered crucible has come into light. As most of the slags were found in the feature 73 of the settlement, this unit was defined as a metallurgical/blacksmith workshop. Although we have to highlight that at the archaeological site we couldn’t identify any concrete trace of a furnace or specified workshop connected with the slag findings. To be able to discover the eventual technological processes and probable heat treatments in the settlement, we selected 7 slags and the adhered slag of the crucible for the examinations. First of all the chemical composition of the selected slags was defined with a Varian 710-ES spectrometer (ICPOES), then samples were made of every selected item were examined with Zeiss EVO MA10 (SEM) scanning electron microscopy equipped with EDAX EDS. A couple of samples were examined with Bruker D8 Advance Xray diffractometer (XRD). Based on the results of the examinations we can categorize the slags to two main groups, which can be divided into subgroups as well. Based on their morphological structures, samples 4, 5 and 6 are probably the byproducts of some kinds of metallurgical process. The major chemical components of these slags are iron-oxides with the domination of the FeO component. During the electron microscopy examinations, the samples showed heterogeneous slag structure, but according to the results of the scanning electron microscopy they showed prismatic polygonal structure as well. In the light of the mixed results, we involved the XRD method to the examination. As a summary of the results, we can say that that slag samples 4, 5 and 6 are by-products of a probable blacksmith treatment, and in the slag heterogeneous structure we can find the also the components of the oven or the fireplace. According to the mineralogical examination, the leucite can be the result of the heating reaction of the burned clay of a long term used fire pit. Regarding the other examined slag pieces, we were not able to determine any metallurgical connection. Before the examinations, regarding the slag-covered crucible, based on the Sarmatian settlements of the period, we assumed that it could be used for bronze or lead smelting. Despite the expectations came into light that according to the morphological-, chemical- and structural characteristics of the adhered slag, the crucible was used for glass smelting, to which technique no previous trace was documented in the Sarmatian settlements of Hungary. 1983 és 1986 között Nagymágocs-Paptanyán a Kr. u. 4. század vége és 5. század közepe közötti időszakra keltezhető, szarmata település részletét tárták fel. A település 7 objektumából eltérő szerkezetű salakmaradványok, egy helyről pedig egy salakos felületű tégely is előkerült. A tégely és a legtöbb salak, a 73. objektumból származik. A lelőhelyen nem került elő olyan egyértelműen ipari objektum, aminek tevékenysége salakképződéssel járna együtt. A vasműves/kovácsműhelyként meghatározott 73. objektum funkciójára csupán a salakleletek utalnak. Közülük összesen 8 darabot vizsgáltunk, beleértve a tégely felületére olvadt tapadványt is. Legelőször a salakokból vett minták kémiai összetételének meghatározása történt Varian 710-ES tömegspektrométerrel (ICP-OES), majd a darabokból vett újabb mintákról ezután csiszolatokat készítettünk. Ezeket EDAX energiadiszperzív (EDS) mikroszondával felszerelt Zeiss EVO MA10 pásztázó elektronmikroszkóppal (SEM) vizsgáltuk meg. Néhány mintát Bruker D8 Advance röntgen pordiffraktométerrel (XRD) is megvizsgáltunk. A minták, amelyeket a salakokból vettünk, alapvetően két csoportba oszthatók, melyekben további alcsoportok különíthetők el. A 4., 5. és 6. salakminták morfológiai sajátosságai alapján is, vélhetően vasművességi tevékenységből származnak. Kémiai összetételükben alapvetően vasoxidok, azon belül is a nagy FeO tartalom dominál. Elektronmikroszkópos vizsgálatok alapján heterogén salakszerkezetet találtunk. Mindazonáltal a SEM vizsgálatok alkalmával prizmás poligonos szerkezetet is találtunk, amely felvetette a kérdést a salak eredetét tekintve. Többek között ezért, illetve a vizsgálatok komplexitása érdekében néhány mintát röntgen-pordiffrakciós eljárással is megvizsgáltunk. A vizsgálatok összesített konklúziójaként a 4., 5. és 6. salakminták olyan vasművességhez köthető (valószínűleg kovácsoláshoz, de elméletben nem zárható ki a metallurgiai fázis sem) darabok, amelyeknek heterogén szerkezetébe a kovácstűzhely vagy kemence falából származó maradványok is keveredhettek. Az ásványtani vizsgálattal azonosított leucit például tipikusan káliumdús, szilíciumszegény olvadékból kristályosodhat ki, de lehet akár szilárd fázisú, termikus reakció eredménye is, azaz származhat huzamosabb ideig 1100-1400 oC-on használt kovácstűzhely, vagy kemence kiégett agyagából. A többi salakminta vizsgálata nem hozott olyan eredményt, amely alapján bármelyiket egyértelműen vas vagy fémművességi tevékenységhez lehetne kötni. A 73. objektumból előkerült öntőtégely több tevékenységhez kapcsolódó munkafolyamatból is származhat.
