Mivel a diákoknak idegen nyelven kell kommunikálni, ezért a mindennapi társas interakciók is kihívást jelentő feladattá nőnek, és különböző kommunikációs nehézségek lépnek fel. Tovább nehezíti a helyzetet a szállodák szigorú szabályokkal rendelkező világa, a társas támogatás hiánya és a kulturális különbségekből fakadó konfliktusok. A 2-6 hónap időtartamú programok esetében ezek a problémák és negatív élmények akár még intenzívebben jelentkezhetnek, hiszen a megküzdési stratégiák kialakulására sokszor nincs kellő idő, és az idegen környezet miatt a kulturális sokk jelenségével is számolni kell. Emiatt nagyon fontos megismerni, hogy pontosan milyen nehézségekkel küzdenek a hallgatók a külföldi munkavégzés során, teljesítményüket mi befolyásolja, és hogyan tud a munkahely hatékony segítséget nyújtani a kulturális adaptáció különböző fázisaiban. Jelen tanulmányban bemutatásra kerülnek a 33 fős, görög és spanyol szállodákban szakmai gyakorlatot töltő fókuszcsoport fél éves követése alapján készült kvalitatív és kvantitatív kutatási eredmények.
