films have been formed on various metallic substrates using the set-gel (SG) technique. Thicker films can be formed by increasing the withdrawal rate of the substrate from the SG solution, by applying multiple coatings and by forming the films using an anhydrous vs. hydrated Ir chloride precursor. Films dried either in air or at temperatures up to ca. 500 degrees C are initially metallic in nature, but can be readily converted to IrOx by extending the potential positive of 1.2 V vs. RHE, while films dried at 650 degrees C are formed directly as Ir oxide. The films generally display facile kinetics of the Ir(III)/(IV) reaction, as seen from the mirror-image CV peaks and linear sweep rate dependence of peak current density. The thickest films formed at the most rapid withdrawal rates do show evidence of transport controlled kinetics.
