A modern kori fantasztikus irodalomnak – amelyben a fantasztikum élménye már szinte teljesen az írás, a nyelv fogalmához kötődik – egyik legfőbb központja a latin-amerikai földrész lett. Bár Julio Cortázar a Río de la Plata térségét tartotta a latin-amerikai fantasztikus irodalom választott hazájának, nem tagadta, hogy a műfaj a kontinens más országaiban is kiemelkedő képviselőkre talált. Talán nem túlzás azt állítani, hogy a fantasztikum elméletének számos neves kutatója is az amerikai kontinensről származik. Jelen kötet néhány figyelemre méltó elméleti megközelítést gyűjt csokorba. Egy olyan hiánypótló gyűjteményt tart a kezében az olvasó, amelyben jórészt mindeddig csak spanyol nyelven megjelent tanulmányokat adunk közre.
