Yeast cells are able to form colonies on solid media with diverse morphologies depending on their genetics and the properties of their environment (e.g.: the quantity and quality of nutrients or the density of the agar plate). Interactions between different strains in a colony also affect the shape and composition of microbial communities. These connections can play an important role in nature and can be crucial for agriculture and industry (e.g.: winemaking and brewing). \n We are developing an agent-based computational model for studying interactions between various yeast strains by simulating the growth and morphology dynamics of single and mixed colonies. This simple and minimal model can reproduce qualitatively the shapes and patterns of natural yeast colonies on solid media. The parameters can be set to represent different fitness levels (e.g. different nutrient uptake or metabolism) that result in communities with different size and cell number (Figure 1A). Competition between two strains for available nutrients can be also simulated with our tool (Figure 1B). The parameters of the computational model are being estimated based on laboratory experiments.
