On the history of the word gányó ’loafer’
In the present paper, I am going to attempt to prove that the word *gányó* 'loafer'
originates from the Szeged dialect. I am going to present early data, uncover different
semantic layers and the relationships between these. Data on its geolinguistic expansion
will also be shown. Using the example of this lexeme in question that never actually
penetrated the vernacular, I am going to uncover the factors determining the development
of its pejorative meaning and will also present a hypothesis about its etymology.
