    The paper presents a manufacturing cladistic classification methodology as well as methods and tools for rapid layout design of manufacturing systems. Using the cladistic approach, the evolutionary relationships between forty-four candidate species of manufacturing systems have been hypothesised, described and presented diagrammatically. The paper presents two sorts of layout configurators: a configurator that supports the rapid creation of 3D models of manufacturing systems, and a DES configurator that supports the rapid creation of the DES models of manufacturing system. The configurators create the layout of the manufacturing systems based on the selection of an appropriate layout template. The layout templates are defined by the species identified using the cladistic classification or by the predefined sub-species where each sub-species inherits the characteristics of its species. Based on the selected layout template and given production process the appropriate elements of the manufacturing systems are selected from a predefined component library.
