    The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is a dominant parameter in a great variety of thermal engineering problems. The HTC has usually high uncertainty as its determination is quite difficult either by calculation or by measurement. The easiest way of the determination of the HTC is to estimate it based on temperature readings from thermocouples inserted into the wall. This needs the solution of the corresponding inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP). Neural networks have been successfully applied to such kind of inverse problems. In this work we apply neural network to determine the time dependent HTC in a transient heat transfer problem based on simulated temperature readings.
