    Ecophysiological behaviour of the common weed Rubus fruticosus agg. is discussed behaving in canopy gaps of three microclimatically different deciduous forest types in the Transdanubian region (Hungary, Central-Eastern Europe). Functional ecological investigation was carried out on blackberry (Rubus fruticosus agg.) by field IRGA measurement of carbon dioxide exchange and water use performance. Instantaneous light response for assimilation, transpiration and water use efficiency mainly differed in the seasons as well as forest types. According to light and air humidity, gas exchange performance proved to be moderate and seasonally balanced in turkey oak forest, highly fluctuated in beech forest and well-performed as optimal in oak-hornbeam woodland. Stomatal regulation induced by environmental limitation can be presumed during the summer season. Assimilation capacity and water use efficiency as the main functional indicators is coupled with the field abundance of the studied species under canopy gap conditions.
