Production and investigation of a metal matrix composite pipe

      Metal matrix composites (MMCs) ensure outstanding application possibilities in many industrial fields; therefore the development of half-industrial and industrial products is extremely important. In our work a MMC pipe was produced by pressure infiltration technique. Near eutectic AlSi12 aluminium alloy was used as matrix material. The reinforcement was ~60 vol% carbon fiber coiled on a steel pipe. The produced composite pipe was 150 mm and 100 mm in length and in outer diameter respectively and had 5 mm of wall thickness. Optical and electron microscopic pictures were taken and analyzed to characterize the quality of the infiltration. After that, a special three-point bending test was applied to determine the flexural strength of the pipe. X-ray diffraction measurements were performed to find traces of possible chemical reactions between the matrix and the reinforcement. The microscopic investigations showed that, the infiltration was perfect and the volume fraction of the carbon fibres was alternating linearly along the length of the pipe. The mechanical investigations showed that the composite has high strength and the flexural strength had a strong dependence on the volume fraction. X-ray diffraction measurements indicated minimal Al4C3 formation in the interface region between the matrix material and the reinforcement.
