Exotic kinetic phenomena such as concentration oscillations and oligo-oscillations,
chemical chaos, multistationarity and multistability, chemical waves and spatial structures
attract significant attention because, beyond their intrinsic interest, they are thought
to be simple models of important biological processes. In the present paper these
phenomena are surveyed from both theoretical and experimental points of view. The
survey contains both historical material and recent developments. It quotes about
300 references, and gives a picture of this dynamically developing field of chemical
kinetics which is fairly detailed but can still be readily assimilated.
