Dies wäre die Aufgabe der Philologie. In einem zweiten Schritt soll die Interpretation (Hermeneutik) folgen, d. h. eine aus unterschiedlichen Aspekten vollzogene Deutung jener Textfassung, die als Resultat der philologischen Arbeit festgelegt und der Interpretation zur Verfügung gestellt worden ist. Die Philologie ginge demzufolge der Hermeneutik voraus und spaltet sich augenfällig von ihr ab, während sich die Deutung ihrerseits auf die Resultate der philologischen Arbeit stützt. Dieses nahe liegende (idealtypische) Schema mag sich wohl in einzelnen – glücklichen – Fällen als funktionsfähig erweisen, versagt jedoch beim (historisch-kritischen) Edieren von Texten einiger bedeutender Denker. Das Herstellen oder Feststellen der Texte selbst erfolgt nämlich nicht unter Laborumständen oder in einem quasi deutungsleeren oder interpretationsfreien Raum. Der Fall Hegel z. B. scheint denn auch vom Gegenteil zu zeugen: In der heutigen Hegel-Forschung wird eine Ansicht geltend gemacht, nach welcher die Schüler Hegels dessen Texte auf Grund ihres eigenen Hegel-Bildes (d. h. ihrer Hegel-Interpretationen) ediert und herausgegeben hätten.
