    ABSTRACT Hungary received over €300 million (about HUF 81 billion) in 2004-2006 to support its rural communities from European Union. The paper analyses modernising and competitive agricultural production, focussing on hygiene rules and food processing, as most of this support should be used. So that Hungarian production should meet the EU's consumer standards. Other funds flow into activities aimed at expanding rural business activities such as tourism and heritage sites. Support from the Structural Funds can be available through the Operational Programme for Agricultural and Rural Development (OPRD) including five Operational Programmes of the Hungarian National Development Plan. National Development Plan of Hungary was declared admissible by the European Commission, and adopted by the Hungarian Government in March 2003 for the period 2004-2006 in value of HUF 27 billion. Structure of OPARD contents its 57,0% for establishing competitiveness of basic materials production in agricultural sector, its 14,0% for modernisation of food manufacture, its 26,5% for development of rural areas, and its 2,5% for technical assistance. The OPARD supports can be used for areas less than 120 inhabitants/km2 and for settlement less than 10000 inhabitants in Hungary. JEL CLASSIFICATION Regional and Rural Economics
